Another vessel attacked in the Gulf of Guinea. Safety services are reporting an overall increase of activity in the region.

In Gulf of Guinea a group of armed pirates hijacked a 38-year old bulk carrier “Stevia” and took 8 hostages off board, among them 6 Ukrainians. The vessel was reportedly sailing from Southern Nigeria to Abidjan, Ivory Coast when pirates approached it. Moreover, Praesidium reports that the vessel’s speed dropped and was drifting for about two hours.

The Cameroonian flagged bulk carrier built in 1802 was operating with 15 people on board in total on December, 16. An unknown number of attackers captured 8 of them and took them to an unknown destination. The rest of the crew managed to get into the citadel and remained on the ship.

The daughter of the captured sailor said to the sea portal Seafarers Journal – “I turn to you for help “. In Nigeria 8 people (6 Ukrainians) abducted from a dry cargo ship “Stevia” owned by Albanians since May 2020. Among the hostages is my father – Reznichenko Semyon Ivanovich (40 years old) – the Ukrainian captain’s senior assistant. Unfortunately, the names of other captured crew members are unknown to me,”. In addition, the captain of the ship, captain’s senior assistant, second assistant, senior mechanic, electrician and Viper were captured.

According to Dryad’s analysis, this is the 27th kidnapping case in the region in 2020 with 138 people abducted. Praesidium notes the recent threats by local Nigerian militants which it believes contributed to the recent spike in attacks in the area. They warn that additional piracy attacks are possible.
