Attacks against ships and crews members rose by 20% in the first half of 2020, stated by ICC International Maritime Bureau.
Rise in Attacks since 2019.
In total IMB Piracy Centre recorded 98 incidents of piracy in the first half of 2020. While in 2019 it was 78 incidents. Total of 77 seafarers have ben taken hostage or kidnapped for ransom since January. The Gulf Of Guinea became the most dangerous hotspot for piracy yet.
Piracy became a global problem and is increasing as we speak and read. Pirates use to target ships now they target every vessel in the sea. Director Michael Howlett mentioned” In the Gulf Of Guinea attacked armed with knives and guns target crews on every type of vessel, everyone is vulnerable”
With the global pandemic occurring, piracy has increased drastically. As countries become more poorer , poverty rises as well ass crime organisations. Furthermore people need to work, so many join piracy organisations for money not knowing the consequences behind it. Many haven’t seen weapons , knives or are too young to hold a knife even.
As we speak piracy is increasing, global international crime organisations are increasing and preparing for another day of hunting. Commercial ship will always be a threat towards piracy as long as those countries stay in poverty.
