As a suprise for many there have been no incidents nor accidents occurring around Somalia and the Gulf Of Aden between the periods of January-March apart from that according to several sources no incidents have occurred for a longer period of time. Nowadays it has become more easier for vessels to employ contracted security guards onboard (PCASP) to insure safety.
However this doesn’t neglect the fact that Somali Pirates cannot attack. Somali pirates are by far more clever now than previously in the years.

Furthermore the Indonesian Marine Police (IMP) and the IMP PRC has shown a good impact as they started to cooperate and decrease in the numbers of attacks has occurred. Authorities instruct all vessels to have anti piracy watches to avoid incidents at all time

Piracy in Malacca Straits and Singapore Straits

Have confirmed that the amount of incidents decreased however what many don’t know is that the Malacca Strait is the strategic passage of petroleum and natural gas transport making it automatically a gold spot for pirates to plan attacks on. Besides the Singapore Strait vessels have been warned about an increase in pirate activity. Many incidents remain unreported.

IMD: reported 5 incidents in first quarter of 2020 in Malacca Straits and Singapore Straits.

Piracy in West Africa (Gulf of Guinea)

Now talking about West Africa (Gulf of Guinea) is one of the most aggressive areas that involve serious pirate attacks. 21 incidents reported in the region .The number of Incidents keep increasing drastically throughout the years especially in/of Benin anchorage. This year 2 kidnappings occurred and many remaining unreported. Justifying that cases are left abandoned. Nevertheless piracy is increasing and stopping is difficult.

Piracy activities in Latin America

Piracy has been a problem on the coastline of Suriname and Guyana however incidents did drop by 2020 , since the horrible “Massacre” on 4th of May 2018 as the President of Guyana stated. Officials of Suriname and Guyana confirmed that they have worked against piracy in the region. Maritime security was more stable as the 2 countries cooperated. However causing a big impact on the economy of Suriname as many fisherman are in fear of returning to sea. Insight Crime has called Venezuela “criminal chaos”. Insight Crime is a non profit organisation studying organised crime in South America. As mentioned above , crimes are cruel and not low profile.
