New international amendments for sailers captured by pirates. We remind you that the employment rights to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) enter into force on December 26, 2020. The ILO tripartite committee adopted the amendments in April 2018. As a matter of fact the amendment comes during a resurgence of recently reported piracy attacks.
The essence of the amendments:
Seafarers’ employment contracts including wage regulations and other rights continue to apply when seafarers in captivity on or off a ship as a result of acts of unlawful interference (piracy, robbery, etc.). These rights may include vacation and pension contributions.
The rights of the seafarer stipulated in the employment contracts must remain in effect until the seafarer released and repatriated or dies in captivity.
This amendments to the MLC ensures that the family of the missing seafarer receives financial support throughout the captivity period.
