Piracy Activities Against Ships in Asia

The ReCAAP ISC reported five incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia. In the past few weeks, there is a increase in the number of pirate activity in Asia. Pirates have become more aggressive, they attack ships of different classes and sizes. At time fully armed.

ReCAAP ISC informed that one of the attack occurred 30 November at 06:20 against the vessel “Semirio”. The Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier reported that it was approached and boarded. Crew members noticed two pirates nearby the steering gear room. The alarm raised and crew started to search for criminals. However there was no sight of the pirates on board. Some engine parts were missing. The vessel “Semirio” was sailing in the eastbound lane of the TSS in the Singapore Strait when the attack took place. All crew are safe. Local authorities were notified. A safety navigational broadcast began to alert seafarers.

Further into the incident.

Two incidents occurred on 25th November while at anchor. One tanker “Fairchem Sword” was anchored in Dumai Anchorage, Indonesia, and then another one “Epic Bolivar” on the Pusur River, Mongla, Bangladesh. If on the vessel “Fairchem Sword” crew members sighted pirates and had nothing missing so from the tanker “Epic Bolivar” criminals stole auxillary engine spares. In the issue, pirates escaped from the board uncaught. Currently the investigation is ongoing. The attacks reported to coastal authorities.

Nonetheless theft of items from the ship has increased in the region. On 19 Nov on board a bulk carrier while anchored at Inner Anchorage, Campha, Vietnam unloading cargo found ship’s stores stolen from a vessel. Moreover, on the next day three pirates with guns took away a Yamaha 15HP (OBM) outboard motor, crew members’ belongings and two mobile phones from the fishing boat “TW 5320/6 F”. The vessel was sailing in Inderasabah, Tawau, East Malaysia. The police is currently investigating the attack.
