Oil Pirates Are Approaching The Shores Of The USA.

Escalation of maritime piracy in reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic. Pirates are already approaching the shores of the USA, presenting a new threat to the energy industry. In mid-October, the US Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago issued an official warning due to a potential environmental disaster caused by a Venezuelan oil tanker.

In Mexico’s Bay of Campeche, piracy attacks on slow-moving vessels have increased. That clearly worries the Americans as they import most of the oil from the Gulаf. About 17% of the country’s crude oil and 5% of the country’s natural gas. Hundreds of oil tankers with different fuels cross the Gulf of Mexico to refineries in Texas and Louisiana and back. However, the increase in sea piracy in Mexico has received relatively little government attention. There are opinions that this is all in order not to jeopardize large private investments in the energy industry in Mexico.

The US State Department issued an official piracy warning in April in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Piracy is primarily associated with several hotspots around the world. The waters of Venezuela and Peru were previously pirate hotspots, but the area appears to be expanding.

The Venezuelan government is under intense international pressure due to a pirate attack that could potentially damage surrounding countries and islands. The tanker “Nabarima” a storage vessel was in disrepair for several weeks by then, threatening to dump 1.3 million barrels of crude oil into Venezuelan waters.

With the Covid-19 pandemic increasing oil reserves at sea, there are increasing reports of piracy. Nevertheless, hot spots such as the Gulf of Guinea off of West Africa remain high-risk areas for energy companies.
