Manila , Philippines anchorage and port has always been a hotspot for Piracy. 2020 proved it once again, as pirate attacks have doubled.
ReCAAP provided a special report based on the increase of attack in anchorage and ports of Manila, Philippines. ReCAAP stated that the report is a warning indicator for ships operating within this region. Ships within the region must increase their safety precautions.
Regardless safety precautions incidents increased within the first 9 months of 2020. According to sources in 2019 there were only 7 incidents whilst in 2020 double the number. In addition ReCAAP highlighted that Manila has been functioning as a “Green Zone” for crew changes during the pandemic, meaning that it’s attracting more vessels playing important role in the maritime industry. Automatically the regions becomes a hotspot for pirate attacks, especially during hours of darkness when visibility is low.
Furthermore ReCAAP ISC report states that captains, crew members are strictly advised to prepare for vigilance , maintain constant observatory for any small pirate boats. Any attacks and reports must be notified immediately to all authorities.
