Maritime Piracy is becoming a more dangerous target for authorities .

Over the years pirates have become more intelligent and demonstrated several interesting evolutions. Their ability shown by the amount of attacks they create especially in West Africa (Gulf Of Guinea). The evolution of maritime piracy is changing to a new level. What will be next?

Briefly about the evolution of how pirates attack.

In 2010 piracy in the Gulf was considered limited because they could reach a maximum of 30 nautical miles from shore .However with technology advancing , they use mother vessels and fast motor boats that could go up to 100-120 nautical miles away from shore.

Apart from that their ability to sail and to communicate advanced as well. As a result making their attacks planned accurately. Recently March 25 , 2020 authorities reports pirates using aluminium ladders which could be nearly 10 meters long. Therefore pirates are able to raise the ladder from a skiff sealing at high speed alongside any vessel.

Pirate Organisations have shown that their ability to read the steps and breach advanced security measures of the maritime industry is possible. Now asking millions of dollars for authorities to get their crew members back.

World Economy is a huge factor

In addition because of the economical crisis it left many areas vulnerable with less security and not enough money to fund military. This will allow the pirates to move and operate more freely around the sea.

For example according to many attacks recently , sources authorities state that pirates are capable of even traveling 150 nautical miles from shore without having a mother ship nearby , they can perfectly operate their attack.

Apart from that they use technological advances such as hacking and cyber attacks throughout systems on ships. As mentioned in the introduction a new era of piracy is evolving . The question is what will be next in the future ?
