Unsuccessful Piracy Attacks In The Gulf Of Guinea.

The Gulf of Guinea is currently a high risk operating area. Across 24 piracy attacks within the Gulf of Guinea 118 kidnapped seafarers in 2020. In accordance with, IMB pirates gangs in the region “well organized and targeting all vessel types over a wide range”

Praesidium reports that on December 3rd, approximately 40 nautical miles SSW of Agbami on the Panama-flagged reefer “Cool girl” piracy attack took place. Two speed boats with 6 to 8 people onboard each. However, the crew took refuge in the citadel. Master carried out evasive maneuvers, Nigerian Navy Detachment responded and the speedboats subsequently left the area. The superstructure was damaged in a firefight. Vessel and crew are reportedly safe.

On December 4th, approximately 231 nautical miles south of Lagos the Greek-flagged tanker “MINERVA EVROPI” reported the failed maritime attack. One white speed boat with an unknown number of pirates approached the vessel. In addition, they were shooting the vessel. Due to several evasive maneuvers the boat left.

The Dryad Global indicates that the piracy boat was pursuing the French flagged MT “Verranze”. The alarm was raised. The Security Escorting Vessel (SEV) proceeded towards the approaching speed boat. The pirates abandoned to approach the vessel after noticing the SEV. This piracy attempt to attack took place on December 5th, in the area of the attack on “MINERVA EVOPRI” the day before.

Dryad Global reported that this is the 68th incident in the region this year. They suggested that with previous unsuccessful attacks this week, the pirates are likely becoming more desperate.
