As pirates kidnap sailors for ransom, what is the “right” price for their life? Generally depending on the family’s, employer’s or government’s attitude and means, the kidnappers might make several million dollars here – or nothing at all. Moreover, the abduction methods are as varied as their motives. Pirates, if possible, target to kidnap-for-ransom foreigners because of their high status, vulnerability and perceived wealth. The duration of any abduction can also vary greatly. While many high-profile kidnapping cases stretch out over weeks, months, or even years.

Kidnapping for ransom is a chronic problem around the world because it can be an incredibly lucrative business for the pirates.

However how difficult it is to be held hostage by pirates? Unequivocally, for sailors it is difficult to adjust to life after their ordeal. There was an occurrence in Somali when hostages ate rats to survive. Pirates gave them only small amounts of water. The group of sailors were in captivity for five years. Primarily, 29 men were captured, however 3 of them died in captivity. Eventually, pirates got payment and freed sailors.

Pirates looking for a ransom opportunity attack all types of vessels. Unambiguously, they don’t care about sailors. They exhaust them and don’t give enough food. Their main idea is to make money as much as they can.

It is very important to have necessary equipment onboard in order to protect sailors and vessel against piracy attack.

In conclusion, hijacking is always a threat towards maritime crew members vessels and governments. With every person missing, pirates become stronger. Its no longer a threat but a global issue.
